Bio: After spending six years on the professional kickboxing circuit, Pat “HD” Barry entered the UFC with just three professional MMA bouts under his belt. And while his MMA career is still young, Barry has proven to be one of the most entertaining fighters in the heavyweight division.

Barry began his professional combat career in 2002, winning the U.S. Open International Martial Arts national title in Sanshou. He earned a spot on the US National Team, and followed that up with a silver-medal performance at the Kung-fu World Championships in China. Over the next six years, Barry would go on to compete in the K-1 kickboxing organization, compiling a professional kickboxing record of 18-6-1 while never suffering a knockout defeat before making the permanent transition to MMA.

As Barry explains it, he isn’t on TapouTVTC.com to show you the intricacies of the rubber guard, or the proper positioning to hit a mounted gogoplata. No, Barry is here because he possesses some of the most dangerous striking in the heavyweight division and with his instruction, your strikes can reach the same level. Barry’s leg kicks in particular have become his signature strike, as you can see in this short online MMA training video below:

He has finished multiple opponents with them in both MMA and kickboxing, including in his UFC debut against Dan Evensen. For those who say that leg kicks can’t end fights, Barry is example A, B and C to the contrary. And while most fighters throw leg kicks, few do so correctly, and throwing a leg kick with just the tiniest mistake can mean the difference between slight pain and serious damage.

Leg kicks have been used as a great equalizer for Barry who — at just 5’11 as a heavyweight — is often shorter than his opponents by a good five or six inches. As Barry chops his opponents down, their hands start to drop, leaving them open for the various combinations that Barry throws from multiple angles. For members of TapouT VTC who are not blessed with 80 inch reaches, learning how to properly fight a taller opponent means less time eating long range strikes and more time delivering punishment. Here are the 10 courses Barry teaches at TapouT VTC:

  • Right Leg Low Kick
  • High Kick From Chin
  • Trick Right High Kick
  • Sneaky Spinning Hook Trick
  • Modified Blocks for Low Kick
  • Outside Jab Angle
  • Inside Jab Angle
  • Left Hook to Body
  • Trick Right Hand
  • Left Hook Left High Kick Trick

Angles are especially important to a shorter fighter like Barry, who uses them to deceive his opponents and deliver damage while avoiding their counterpunches. Ask any high-level boxing or kickboxing coach and they will tell you that angles is one of the most important things in fighting. Barry shows multiple attacks off of angles in his TapouT VTC modules, from where to cut off of your opponent’s jab to how to deliver a left head kick off of a left hook. Join TapouT VTC today to learn from Barry and other top MMA pros.
